Networking with a Passion

by Susan Makowski - Apr 9, 2010

Non-profit networking is like job hunt networking, only with a budget of $0. It can only tell you what you would receive if you make the contribution (and are hired). When you're without a job, the product you are selling is you. This can be difficult to grasp.

All of us have the knowledge of networking, but we must make a new focus. Excuse the pun, but "Shift Happens"!

Network with a Strategy or Plan in Place
  • Challenge yourself to only give business cards to those people you connect with at each event on a personal level. Make your card mean something.
  • Meet the new person and try understand them, and only then give out your card. This gives you and your contact a reason to re-connect in the future, as well as something to talk about. You'll be remembered. Make a note on your card. Treat it like something extremely valuable.
  • Pick your networking events (no more than three to four) and become someone important in each of these groups. Aim towards professional groups, civic groups, organizations within your field of expertise. Show passion in what you do.
  • Find someone that can be a resource for you at each event. Check on LinkedIn. This may even lead to you being a speaker, to share your knowledge.
  • Become a resource at each event. Try to connect several people together. They soon will become part of your network. You will be remembered as a connector and stand out from the crowd.
Use your Passion to Get your Next Job

I was a manufacturers representative, and then became involved with the Cancer Society because my family was touched by cancer. I became a volunteer to give something back to society. I discovered that there were similarities to a sales job. After showing the director my resume, I got the job!

"If you go with your passion at a lower paying job, you will eventually recover your money. It will come back to you."

I then decided to move on to my own business, due to economic downturn. Now I also work for a candidate for Orlando City Commission due to connections.

People Need to Know You

Showing your passion will let that happen. Be a volunteer, get involved with advisory committees, write articles, etc. People will hear of you before they hear from you. The best of both worlds. Your connections will be exponential.

Let your connections know what is going on with you periodically. Despite what you think, they will look to help you.

Get involved with community organizations. Community Leaders will see and remember you if you show your passion. This may take some time and effort, but will pay dividends in the end.
